Cold brew coffee
Cold brew coffee is so easy to make and has revolutionised my coffee drinking life. The main advantages are: 1. It saves time. You can make a batch and then drink it over a few days, meaning less cleaning and preparation time.2. It isn't as bitter as normal coffee, and as it is cold you can more easily take it out and about with you. 3. It is obviously so much cheaper than buying it from a coffee shop.I've kept the instructions brief, so please look at the notes at the end for additional guidance on making the perfect cold brew coffee.
Equipment
- coffee filter dripper cone or some other method of filtering
- 2 large jug (1 litre /2 pints)
Ingredients
- 100 g coffee beans
- 1 tsp other spices to flavour experiment with care!
Instructions
- Grind your coffee beans. This should be on the coarsest setting that your grinder has. Tip the coffee beans into one of the jugs.100 g coffee beans
- Add extra spices as desired (this is an optional step). Once you are happy with making the basic cold brew coffee, you can experiment by adding different spices such as cinnamon. My only caution would be to do add minimal amounts when first experimenting, as otherwise the the other spices may overpower the coffee.1 tsp other spices to flavour
- Add 1 litre / 2 pints of water into the jug. Stir the coffee granules and water together.
- Leave for about 24 hours at room temperature. This is where the coffee will steep
- Using the filter dripper cone and filter paper, filter the coffee into the other jug that you have ready.
- The coffee mixture can be stored in the fridge for 7-10 days before starting to lose its taste.
- And finally drink! One thing to note is that the coffee will be quite strong so you will want to dilute it with water. This comes down to taste, I tend to dilute 1 part coffee to 3 or 4 parts water.
- Given I am going for the healthiest option, I drink my coffee black, but you can of course add other dairy or non-dairy products as part of a balanced diet.
